The Contrast of Calm and Bold: Inside a Modern Pune Villa
In Pune’s up-and-coming residential hot spot in Baner, is this 3 storey Villa inhabited by a young family of four. The row house is situated in a quaint neighbourhood amidst lush greenery and a private backyard.
Stepping into the interior of the house is unexpected in the best possible way. In contrast with the surrounding exterior of the villa, the interiors are bold and magnetic.
The entire 3 storey space is designed in a way that exudes charm and charisma. Every corner becomes a unique element that contrasts and compliments each other to give the house a larger-than-life identity.
… specifically keeping that in mind. Moving upstairs to the open-planned Living and Dining area, the focal feature is the front wall wearing lengthy arches inverted in an alternating pattern, highlighted using warm yellow light. The cream-coloured lime wash on the walls adds earthiness to the bright interior. The living area overlooks out into the backyard below and the patterned pergola extends beyond. The geometric print chair stands as a solo contrast element alongside the neutral walls. All through the interior spaces, one can notice how lighting has been used to emphasize the delicate details. The warm light emitted from behind the semi-circular depressions highlights the minimal grooves on the wall and seems to cast a moon-like shadow on the carved lines. The open living and dining area is the common space shared by all members of the family. The double-height dining area is a central feature in and by itself, where a prominent chandelier hangs filling the large open space with abundant light. The fluted glass shutters on the crockery unit, set in walnut brown wood, bring elegance to the space and complement the blush cream marble top of the dining table. The warm yellow light brings out the darker tones of the wood and goes together with the earthy mauve cushions. A slight distinction between the living and dining area has been achieved by locating the living space a step-down, giving it a pit-like character, without the transition being too noticeable. The interior space therefore merges into one another, enlarging the area, ideal as the central space for a family. On the topmost floor of the villa, is the master bedroom, where the king-size four-poster bed fills the space. The interior is dramatic and captivating – from the sheer, white flowing drapes engulfing the bed frame to the floral wing chair in the corner of the room, every piece is designed to be soft and charismatic. In comparison to the warm light downstairs, the tone here is much cooler, complementing the design styles as well as the colours. The depressed wall panelling behind the bed frames the headboard and is inspired by the soft, rolling hills surrounding the property. The colours used are blush-toned pinks, in contrast with the deep teal cushion of the bed and end tables. The finishing touches such as the linear wall lamp and a black glass top on the table add a minute accent to the overall look. The teal-coloured console matches the bed and the sleek legs supporting and framing the solid box, give the piece a refined quality. The eye-catching, floor-to-ceiling light built into the wall is a design feature that stands as a focal element while simultaneously working with the other elements in the room. The boys’ room features a raised wooden platform bed, amongst a sea of vibrant blue and green. The elevated step flush against the lengthy window doubles as the kids’ bed and play space. The concealed drawers provide ample storage for all those scattered toys and make the space clutter-free and spacious. Facing the sizable platform is a colourful activity table for the two kids. The black and white wall art was designed as a collection of their favourite animations and the sprawling track behind the headboard has been painted using magnetic ink, making the artwork not just decorative, but interactive and playful.
